Checking the descriptions on plantNET, it says that H. japonicum can be prostrate or procumbent. It is possible I pulled the stem with the flower up a little bit to get a better picture. They were certainly not erect. The fact that the leaves are all spreading rather than stem clasping is also given as a key difference between japonicum and gramineum.
